In short: you can delete your PairNook account and its associated data at any time, right from the app — or by emailing us if you can no longer access the app. Deletion is permanent.
Not paired yet, or disconnected from your partner? Delete account is at the bottom of the Pair up screen, or, if your partner left, at the bottom of your saved chat.
Deletion runs immediately — there is no waiting period and no way to cancel it afterwards. Chat is signed out on all your devices at once, and PairNook on any other device goes back to its sign-in screen the next time it opens. You can do the same from the web app at web.pairnook.com.
If you can't access the app — for example, you've removed it from your device or lost access to your account — you can still request deletion:
Deleting your account also deletes the couple's shared data — for both of you. PairNook is built for exactly two people, so a couple cannot continue with one partner gone. Either of you can do this alone, and it does not need the other's agreement. Your partner keeps their own account, their sign-in, and anything already saved on their devices — but their copy of the shared data on our servers goes with yours.
When your account is deleted, we remove:
Your partner can still read the chat you had together. Their account stays in your shared end-to-end encrypted room, read-only — nothing new can be sent in it — until they close the chat, pair with someone else, or delete their own account.
So that their app can tell them what happened, and can reconnect the chat if you come back, we keep a small record with their account: the display name you had, the date you left, whether you deleted your account or disconnected, and a one-way fingerprint of your email address (a keyed hash, not the address itself). We clear your name and the fingerprint 12 months after you leave, or sooner if your partner closes the chat, pairs with someone else, or deletes their account.
If you later sign up again with the same email address and pair with them, we first ask you to confirm that address by email. The chat then continues: you can read messages from that point on, but not the earlier ones, because your old encryption keys were deleted with your old account.
Disconnect partner ends the couple without deleting either account. It also deletes the couple's shared server-side data, for both of you, and either partner can do it alone. You can pair with someone again afterwards. As with deleting your account, your partner can still read your past chat, and the same record is kept for them for up to 12 months; if the two of you pair again, the chat reconnects and you can both read all of it.
In the Nook tab you can delete anything you asked, shared or Just me, from its menu; its answer and what it added to the thread go with it. Settings → Nook → Delete my Just me items deletes all of your Just me items at once. You can hide your partner’s Nook items for yourself, but only they can delete them. Forgetting a Little Thing is the one exception: when either of you Forgets one, every Nook item that used it is deleted too, shared or Just me. Each delete runs once its few seconds of Undo have passed, and it can’t be reversed after that. What Nook added to your shared Life stays in Life until you delete it there.
Forget deletes a Little Thing for both of you, along with any Nook answer that used it. Forget all deletes every Little Thing you can see: the shared ones, for both of you, and your own gift ideas. It doesn’t delete the gift ideas your partner keeps just for themselves.
If one of you has died and the other marks it in PairNook, the late partner’s private Nook items (their Just me items, gift ideas and secret plans) are deleted 180 days later, unless that account is used again. Nobody can open them in the app in the meantime.
Deletion takes effect immediately, and backups and copies are purged on our regular backup cycle (within about six weeks). We may retain a minimal set of records for longer where required for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes — for example, to comply with a legal obligation. Any such records are kept only as long as necessary and then deleted. Safety reports are one such record: a report you filed, or one filed about you, is kept after a disconnect or an account deletion so that it can still be reviewed. It holds the reason and details written in it, which chat it concerns, the email address of the person who filed it, and the email address and display name of the person it is about, where we have them. A Nook reply you report is one such record too: we keep only Nook’s reply, never what you asked, for 90 days, even after an account is deleted.
Note that content shared with your partner's device may continue to exist on their device or account until they delete it, since each person holds their own copy of an end-to-end encrypted conversation.
